How to use Online Tone Generator
- 1
Put on your headphones or turn on your speakers before you start.
- 2
Choose a wave type. Sine is the smoothest and cleanest. Square is buzzy. Triangle is soft. Sawtooth is bright and a little harsh.
- 3
Move the slider to pick a frequency, or just type a number in the box. Low numbers sound low and deep. High numbers sound high and thin.
- 4
Pick left, right, or both — depends on what you want to check.
- 5
Turn the volume down a bit first, then press Play. You can always turn it up. A loud tone is not fun.
- 6
Watch the waveform on screen — it shows the exact shape of the sound playing. Press Stop when you are done.
What is this thing, exactly?
It is a free online tone generator — you pick a frequency, it plays that sound continuously until you stop it. Simple idea, but it turns out to be useful for a surprisingly wide range of things. Musicians use it to tune instruments. Audio engineers use it to test equipment. Developers use it to check latency. Some people use it to find the resonant frequency of a room or a speaker cabinet. Others use specific frequencies to test their hearing range. And honestly, some people just find it satisfying to mess with the waveforms and listen to the difference between a triangle wave and a sawtooth. Whatever brought you here, it works.
What makes it useful
1 Hz to 20,000 Hz
Covers the full range of human hearing and then some. Sub-bass at the bottom, ultrasonic at the top.
Four wave types
Sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth — each with its own character and harmonic content.
Left, right, or both
Route the tone to one channel or both. Great for checking if a speaker or headphone driver has gone quiet.
Logarithmic frequency control
The slider moves the way your ears hear — precise at low frequencies, wider jumps up top.
Volume control
Keep it reasonable. A steady tone at high volume can get uncomfortable fast.
